The tiny specks of islands in the Arabian Sea to the west of the Indian coastline make the Lakshadweep Islands. Part of Indian territory, this group of coral islands are a real surprise in the ocean. Turquoise blue sea and little pearl white beaches beckon the traveller. It’s a place right out of a picture post card.
Most of the islands are not inhabited. Some have restricted entry. The islands are great for water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, para sailing etc. Foreign tourists need a special permit to visit the islands.
It is easily accessible from mainland by air and sea. There are regular boat services fro the coast of Kerala- Calicut and Cochin. There is also daily flight to the islands. The coral reefs support a variety of aquatic life that a marvel to look at. The tourism authority operates transparent bottom boats for tourists.
It is populated by people of different religions but has a majority of Muslims. It comes directly under Central jurisdiction and administration as it is a Union Territory. The main occupation of the people is fishing and seafood. Coir also is a major industry.
The language spoken is a dialect of the native tongue of Kerala- Malayalam. The southernmost island of Minicoy however has a different language called Mahl. It is the same as spoken in the neighbouring country, Maldives.
Lakshadweep is the place for the luxury seeker as well as the adventure seeker. Though right in the middle of the ocean, they are absolutely safe from cyclones and other natural disasters. |
