Thailand needs no introduction. Famous the world over as a popular tourist destination, Thailand is visited by millions of visitors, drawn to its pristine beaches and aquamarine seas, as well as its rich culture, glitzy shopping malls, chic boutiques and colourful markets crammed with bargains.Beach tourism at Phuket, Pattaya and Hua Hin, solitary palm-fringed islands, converted rice barge, jungle tree house or stay in a hill tribe village, Thailand offers a wealth of choice for every taste and budget. The cultural traditions in dance and music from the country are also very appealing and classical in form. The architecture and the handicrafts from Thailand have inspired people from all walks of life. Largely Buddhist, Thailand is a great place to get introduced to this peaceful religion. Early morning, one can see saffron-robed monks leave the sanctuary of their wats (temples) to receive alms from the people continuing their age old traditions. Buddhism is a way of life here. The official language of Thailand is the Thai language, a Kradai language closely related to Lao, Shan in Burma, and numerous smaller languages spoken in an arc from Hainan and Yunan south to the Malaysian border. It is the principal language of education and government and spoken throughout the country. Thai cuisine is gaining popularity around the world. The exquisite seafood dishes are less spicy compared to other south east Asian countries. Hospitality is an art that the Thais have mastered. One has to just visit and be pampered.
Pattaya is perhaps the most visited beach party destination of south east Asia. A controversial centre, Pattaya has been the centre for all kinds of sexual entertainment before the crackdown on these establishments in 2004. Many still remain and nightlife is one of the main attractions still. The Jomien beach is interesting and so is the Pattaya town with many other places to see. Bungee jumping, para sailing, horse riding , motor sports etc are very popular here. Jomtien Beach lies to the south of the city and is separated from the main part of Pattaya by Pratumnak Hill. Essentially a residential area with beachside hotels, bungalow complexes, condominiums and restaurants, it has an array of watersport activities including jet skis, parasailing and small sail boat (Hobie Cat) rental. Dongtan Beach, just past the Avalon Beach Resort in Jomtien, is known as the gay beach, and is busy every day of the year.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and is almost the size of Singapore. The name Phuket is perhaps derived from the word “bukit†in Malay meaning hill, as the island appears like from a distance. The region was formerly referred to as "Thalang," derived from the old Malay "Telong" meanuing "Cape." The northern district of the province, which was the location of the old capital, still uses this name. Phuket is connected to mainland Thailand by a bridge. It is situated off the south west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. The region has an area of approximately 570sq. km. and is made up of 1 large and 39 small islands. Phuket was severely affected in Tsunami of 2004. There are several coral islands to the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands lie to the north west, and Phi Phi Islands to the south east. Islanders engage in a lively tourist trade, catering to snorkellers and scuba divers.
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. As you alight in the Suvarnabhoomi airport in Bangkok, you are greeted by the giant statue of Lord Vishnu which just reinforces the Indian element in Thailand. Bangkok is a wonder city wher heritage, modernity and classical merge in a style unparalleled elsewhere. Today it is known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, a shortened form of the longest location which reads Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit meaning The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarm. The names gives us an idea of the heritage of the city. See it to believe it.
