Situated 13 kms north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu caves takes its name from the Sungai Batu or Batu River, which flows past the hill. A pilgrim centre for Hindus, the Batu cave has temples dedicated to the Hindu Gods, Murugan (Subramaniaswamy) and Rama. The 42.7 meter tal statue of Lord Murugan stands at the entrance of the caves. 272 concrete steps(once wooden) lead to the main temple cave. The festival of Thaipusam brings around 2 million devotees to the caves. Batu Caves is also the centre of rock climbing development in Malaysia with more than 160 climbing route
