Spread across 85,000 square metres , Kusu Island is one of the Southern Islands of Singapore. Kusu Island in Singapore has a tale to tell. A giant sea turtle saves two shipwrecked sailors – a Malay and a Chinese. As an act of thanks, the two men build a Chinese temple, a Malay shrine and a huge turtle sculpture. Thus the name- Kusu Island meaning "Tortoise Island" or "Turtle Island" in Chinese. Also known as Peak Island or Pulau Tembakul in Malay, it is a main pilgrim centre. Taoists still make annual pilgrimages to the Tua Pekong Temple during the ninth lunar month while Muslims visit Kramat Kusu, the Malay shrine.
