Board ferry for the 1-hour ride to Elephanta Island, home to the World Heritage-listed Elephanta Caves.  Originally called Gharapuri ("Fortress City") and later renamed "Elephanta" by the Portuguese who found a large stone elephant near the landing place. The ancient cave temples date to the fifth century, carved with stunning reliefs and statues that honor the Hindu god Shiva. , the most interesting of which is the three-headed Shiva shown as the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer. Other Shiva panels include one of the deity dancing the “tandava” and thereby causing the world to shake .After touring the cave temples, return by ferry and start your city tour at the Gateway of India, a colonial-era monument that dates to 1924 and overlooks the harbor. At 1pm, purchase lunch at a local restaurant, then drive to several landmarks in Mumbai. Take in  Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus), a historic railway station in Mumbai and UNESCO World Heritage Site; Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai (Crawford Market), a venerable wholesale market; then take in the scenic coastline along Marine Drive, which runs next to the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point to Girgaum Chowpatty and on to Malabar Hill. Take in panoramic views of South Mumbai from the Hanging Gardens (Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) on Malabar Hill, then stop at the Mani Bhawan (Gandhi Museum), a Gujarati-style residence that served as the headquarters for Mahatma Gandhi's organizing
